Bruce Johnson
Bio
Bruce Johnson was born in Nova Scotia, where he trained as a visual artist at the
Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. His art has been exhibited nationally, and
is held in a variety of private and public collections.
In 1993, Johnson moved to St. John’s were he has since worked as the provincial
art gallery’s Curator ofContemporary Art, as well as an essayist and critic. in 2008,
he completed aMasters in Philosophy in Humanities at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Johnson has curated more than 50 exhibitons of contemporary Canadian art,
for public art galleries throughout the country. He has also published numerous
essays and critical reviews, for exhibtion catalogues and periodicals ranging from
Arts Atlantic and Atlantic Books Today to Elle.
In 2003, Johnson received the Christina Sabat Award for Critical Review in the Arts
of Atlantic Canada (Shiela Hugh MacKay Foundation). More recently, his
manuscript "Firmament" was shortlisted for the 2007 Fresh Fish Award (Writer’s
Alliance of Newfoundland & Labrador) and the 2007 Metcalfe-Rooke Award
(Biblioasis).
"Firmament" is his first novel and will be published by Gaspereau Press in Fall, 2009.
