Bio

Eastern Edge Gallery is Newfoundland and Labrador’s first non-profit artist-run centre. Established in 1984, it was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1991, and received charitable status from Revenue Canada in 1995. Our non-juried space, The Rogue, opened in 1995 and the PIN-IN Gallery devoted to 1-inch button projects was inaugurated in 2005. The gallery is situated in downtown St. John’s, the capital city. St. John’s supports a significant concentration of the provincial population and a burgeoning cultural community. Overlooking the St. John’s harbour, Eastern Edge offers support, professional development, a sense of community, information and resource-sharing and a meaningful context for contemporary artistic activity.

Eastern Edge remains committed to exhibiting contemporary Canadian and International art including visual, audio, interactive, performance, film and video, installation, and new media. The gallery encourages work from feminist, social and culturally diverse and inclusive perspectives and is dedicated to rigorous activity locally. Increased activity and visibility within the community has challenged Eastern Edge to build upon its endeavours and ignite new possibilities. For example approximately 90% of all exhibiting artists at Eastern Edge come to St. John’s as visiting artists and interact in the community through artist talks, performances and special projects such as the Education Outreach program that brings artists and high school students together through workshops. These projects encourage new audiences with a broader scope and creative thinking. This upcoming year also marks the 25th anniversary of the centre and the 10th anniversary of the 24 hour Art Marathon, a major summer visual arts festival that celebrates creativity of visual artists, musicians, writers, and performers.

The gallery has a membership of over 100 and the Programming Committee is formed of Board members and invited peers. Six exhibitions are programmed per year in the main space, with regular artist talks, workshops and panel discussions.

Fully committed to the highest standards of professional treatment of artists, in all aspects of the centre’s activities, the gallery is a supportive space for art, which explores new and challenging ideas, questions, concerns, awareness, and sensibilities. The gallery pays artists exhibition fees based on the recommended fee schedule declared by the Canadian Artists' Representative (CAR/FAC).
